Construction is set to finally begin on the long awaited Pilot Waste Water System this Summer.
Sinn Féin Councillor Brendan Barry sought an update on the scheme, which is hoped will help solve the current one-off housing crisis in the county.
He said that the scheme was approved for funding in 2021 but nothing has been constructed. He added that the scheme would have to be monitored for 2-3 years before any recommendation could be made to the public.
Leitrim County Council said following a detailed assessment sites have been selected at Gorvagha and Aughavas and “it is expected construction of the systems will commence in the coming 6-8 weeks.” The pilot scheme involves the development, installation and monitoring of a number of systems at existing Council owned residential sites through the retrofitting of the onsite waste water treatment system.
This was welcomed at the Ballinamore MD meeting on Monday with Cllr Paddy O'Rourke saying a similar idea could have been pushed forward in 2009 and “we would be in a different place now.”
