Athletics
Our school was very well represented on the 27th April taking part in the Athletics competition in the Sligo IT. We had 13 students in multiple categories, three of which got through to the Connachts including Ceili Mollohan who qualified in the shot putt, Christian who qualified in the long jump and Hanora Brady who qualified in the 1500m run. It was a good day out for everyone who represented the school. The Connachts will be taking place on the 19th May in Athlone.
Sarah ‘Flutters and Stings’ her way to All Ireland Champion!
We had a lot of excitement this week welcoming home our very own champion, 3rd year student Sarah McTiernan who became the All Ireland Girl 4 59kg boxing champion on Friday the 21st of April. She fought against Claire Keating from Wexford in the final, beating her 4-1. Special word of congratulations to all in Drumsna Boxing Club especially Ms Greene. We are so proud of Sarah achieving this amazing result and we wish Sarah more success in the future!
Blitz Business
The annual Roscommon/Leitrim First and Second Year Girls Gaelic Football Blitz was hosted by Carrick-on-Shannon Community School took place on Thursday, April 27th at St. Mary’s G.A.A Pitch.
The A competition for exclusive Second Year Teams was contested by Carrick-on- Shannon Community School, Convent of Mercy Roscommon, Scoil Mhuire Strokestown, Ballinamore Community School and last Year’s B winners Drumshanbo Vocational school. The B competition for exclusive First Year Teams and smaller schools was contested by Carrick-on-Shannon Community School, Carrigallen Vocational School, Lough Allen College, Glenamaddy Community School, Castlerea Community School and Mohill Community College.
This tournament started in 2007 and has run each year except 2020 and 2021. We were delighted to welcome Mohill Community College back after a few years of an absence. We were especially delighted to welcome Castlerea Community School and Glenamaddy Community School, both who participated for the first time this year.
In the B Competition Carrigallen Vocational School prevailed from Group 1, with wins over Carrick-on-Shannon First Years and Lough Allen College. Mohill qualified out of Group 2 after jousts with Glenamaddy First Years and Castlerea. The final was a tight affair, with Mohill Community College prevailing on a 1-4 to 0-3 scoreline. Well done to all teams and coaches, and especially Mohill and Carrigallen for a very entertaining final.
The A competition was run on a league basis. Carrick-on-Shannon Community School Second Years won over Ballinamore in round 2 on a 2-5 to 2-3 scoreline proved pivotal as both teams ended the tournament on 6 points. With head-to-head determining the winner, Carrick-on-Shannon were crowned champions for the first time since 2018. Ballinamore were champions in 2022 and can feel unlucky to lose out given their fine wins over Strokestown, Drumshanbo and Roscommon in the final round. Had Roscommon won that game, they would have been champions as they had a narrow 1.2 to 0.3 win over Carrick in round 4.
Many thanks Ronan Butler and St. Mary’s G.A.A Club for allowing us to host the tournament. Thanks to Karina O’Grady and the TY students for running the shop. Thanks T.P. McLoughlin and Cyril McKeon for their wonderful job in officiating the tournament.
Carrick-on-Shannon Community School would also like to thank Cryan’s Hotel for their continued sponsorship of the School Teams.
LCA Trip to Glasnevin Cemetery
Some of our wonderful LCA students and their teachers Ms McNulty and Ms Beirne travelled to Dublin to visit the historical and poignant site of Glasnevin Cemetery. The Students were given a brilliant tour and were really taken by the landmarks of the cemetery including the graves of Collins, Parnell and many, many others. Thanks to those who made this trip possible.
TY trip to the Paddle-Shack
On Tuesday the 25th of April, the TYs went on a thrilling trip to the paddle-shack in Carrick. They enjoyed kayaking and stand up paddle boarding on the Shannon and did different activities such as racing each other, trying to swap paddle boards while on the river and even created a chain by using each other's ankle straps on the paddle boards.
Some brave students even jumped into the river. The students ended the day by getting some well earned lunch in Honestly.
Leaving Cert Practical Exams
It's been a tiring and busy week for both teachers and students this week with all the practical exams buzzing around the school. Well done to all our LC students who had practical’s this week.
CPR and First Aid Training
TYs took part in a wonderful training event in CPR and First Aid this week. This is a very valuable course to do for all students. Thanks to the Order of Malta for their help in rolling out this training event.
