Leitrim survey shows looking to move to the country

Tánaiste reminds employers and employees that they should Work from Home whenever possible

Research by Leitrim County Council reveals that almost a quarter (22%) of Irish workers are fully remote.

Over sixty percent of millennials (25-35 year-olds) are considering a move to another part of Ireland. This comes as the research by Leitrim County Council reveals that almost a quarter (22%) of Irish workers are fully remote.

The research, which was conducted by Bounce, interviewed 1,000 people to gain insights into the remote working culture in Ireland. It showed that those working remotely have a good work-life balance, with 56 percent reporting that remote working conditions deliver a positive impact.

Other benefits of remote working show:

A positive impact on their standard of living (83%);
A reduction in spending (75%);
And a better ability to switch off after work (60%).

Speaking on the research, Lar Power, Chief Executive of Leitrim County Council said, “There is a benefit to remote working for employees in Ireland, with improvements to mental and financial wellbeing clearly defined in the research. Four in ten have found that remote work has positively impacted their spending, as there is less need to commute.”

When it comes to worker efficiency, the research demonstrates a positive impact on productivity with over three quarters (85%) reporting improved productivity from remote work.

With an increase in remote and hybrid working, the research shows that almost half of Irish workers are considering moving to another part of the country. Millennials are the most likely to consider a move, with 61 percent agreeing that they are looking at other areas in Ireland to relocate.

Adding to this, Colm McGrath, President of the Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce said, “With the increased cost of living, it is no surprise to read that employees are moving across the country. Leitrim County is seeing an increase in people moving to the county, given Leitrim had a population increase of 10% in the 2022 Census, the highest increase in the province of Connaught.

“Remote work provides the perfect opportunity to escape the city and work from a calmer setting, without the hustle of the city, long commutes and city congestion. It is our view that this trend will increase into 2023 and beyond, as Millenials opt to raise families in areas where they can afford housing.”
