Aughawillan Drama Group in rehearsal.
The Aughawillan Drama Group is gearing up to present a hilarious production of "Wake in the West," featuring the uproarious antics of a small village in the West of Ireland as they prepare for the wake of Tom Healy, a beloved member of their community.
However, things take an unexpected turn when the local doctor, played by the talented cast, mixes up Tom's last wishes, leading to a series of highly entertaining mishaps.
As the village gathers to mourn the passing of Tom Healy, they soon discover that the corpse seems to be more lively than expected, adding to the already absurd and comical situation. With an incredible cast and a cleverly written script, "A Wake in the West" promises to be a memorable production that will leave audiences in stitches.
The usual suspects are bolstered by new cast arrivals from surrounding parishes, and those of you who saw this production 13 years ago will want to come back again for the same laugh-a-minute delivery of this brilliant comedy.
Donal Quinn takes to the bed once more, delivering a dead-pan performance as Tom Healy at his own wake, witnessing a robbery first hand.
Dessie McManus makes the journey from Swanlinbar to play the playboy of the production, Martin Healy, with a lovely twang and an aversion to marriage, who knows where it will end.
Joan is the forgotten flower, blooming for five long years waiting for Martin to return from the States and marry her. That might or might not happen, as Karen Prior brings Joan to life, delivering a performance of style and panache.
Rose Davitt, a semi-professional Keener, is played by Swanlinbar native Anne Maguire. Anne is brand new to Aughawillan Drama, and has managed to collapse the entire cast in stitches during rehearsals, so you are in for a treat on play night.
Noel Kiernan engages with the medical role as good old Dr. John, who is responsible for a lot of the problems connected to the corpse, and disposal thereof. Doctors handwriting could be the cause…
Eileen McTague takes on the persona of Mary, the daughter of the dead man, and shows her experience on the stage in the capable manner she runs the corpse house, and deals with the demanding funeral arrangements for her father.
When Emma Cronin enters the stage as Margaret, the long suffering wife of an alcoholic, she plays this demanding character with depth, with sanity unravelling right before our eyes for our amusement.
A Priestly role once again finds the intrepid John McTeggart back in the cloth, playing Fr. Cassidy, whose missionary experience and friendly housekeeper are all mentioned to enrage him. His clerical skill is best displayed with a live exorcism on stage.
Barney is a likeable drunk, played once again by Brian Dolan, who is double jobbing as director of this production. He plays Barney with reserve, for the most part, but unleashes on the priest and his wife Margaret at every opportunity.
The play's three-act structure and sharp wit have garnered high praise from audiences and critics alike since it first debuted in Westport, Co. Mayo. This production is no exception and promises to be a night of laughter, fun, and entertainment for all.
Don't miss the chance to experience the uproarious antics of the Aughawillan Drama Group as they bring this witty and heart-warming production to life. With its charming characters, hilarious misunderstandings, and witty dialogue, "A Wake in the West" is a must-see for theatregoers of all ages.
Aughawillan Drama's "Wake in the West" Thursday May 25th to Sunday May 28th, Curtain 8.30 sharp.
