I would like to welcome you all to Carrick-on-Shannon on this beautiful afternoon for Africa Day 2023.  It is wonderful to see so many countries represented here today.

Africa Day celebrating the richness of African cultures and the contribution of people of African descent to Irish life was celebrated last Saturday in The Market Yard in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Africa Day celebrations are organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Irish Aid in partnership with African embassies in Ireland and local authorities around the country.

Speaking on behalf of Leitrim County Council, Cllr Sean McGowan said, "I would like to acknowledge the work of the Community Development Section in Leitrim County Council and the Leitrim International Community Group for organising this event today.

"Today’s event is about giving people from our new communities in Leitrim the opportunity to meet and mingle. There are some new faces and some familiar, but it is great to see so many people out here today to celebrate together.

"Over the last ten years Leitrim has experienced a rise in the number of non-Irish nationals living in the county. Some of these new communities have settled and now regard Leitrim as their home, indeed all our sports clubs have been greatly enhanced by members of the international Community.

"Events like this help to promote integration, respect, and better understanding of the different cultures in our community. In an ever more divided world, where certain groups are determined to divide people, we must take every opportunity to celebrate the value of each other’s’ traditions and culture.

"Thank you for inviting me and I would like to give a special mention to the Market Yard businesses, their staff and to the Leitrim Volunteer Centre who helped us to coordinate the event."
