Cloone native new Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council

Shane Tiernan from Cloone, Co Leitrim

Following a competitive recruitment process conducted by the Public Appointments Service, Mr. Shane Tiernan, a native of Cloone, Co Leitrim, was the preferred candidate recommended to Roscommon County Council for appointment as their new Chief Executive. 

At the Council meeting of the 24th July Mr. Tiernan’s appointment was confirmed by agreement of the full council. He takes up the role having been interim Chief Executive following the retirement of Mr. Eugene Cummins last September. 

Prior to that Mr. Tiernan was Director of Services with Roscommon County Council with responsibility for Infrastructure, Planning and Emergency Services since 2018. 

Mr. Tiernan has worked in the local authority sector since 2008 where he was Acting Director of Services and Senior Executive Officer with Leitrim County Council. 

Mr. Tiernan has wide ranging experience in the sector having held senior management responsibility for many service divisions as well as being Returning Officer for Roscommon in the 2019 local elections. 

Before working in public service Mr. Tiernan held senior management positions with a number of multinational organisations including Ericsson, Magna-Donnelly and Kimball International. 

Qualifying in engineering Mr. Tiernan attended Atlantic Technology University Sligo. He holds a Masters Degree in Management Practice from Trinity College Dublin as well as a Diploma in Management from the Irish Management Institute and is also a graduate of the Harvard Programme for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. 

Speaking on the appointment Cathaoirleach Cllr John Keogh said: “I am delighted to confirm Shane Tiernan’s appointment as Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council. He was successful from a strong field of candidates and he has ably proved himself in delivering for the county in his career with Roscommon County Council to date. 

“I along with my fellow councillors, want to congratulate Shane and wish him continued success where we look forward to working with him and his executive team in continuing to deliver quality  public services to the citizens of Roscommon”, the Cathaoirleach remarked.

Following his appointment Mr Tiernan said: “I look forward to actively working with my colleagues and the elected members of Roscommon County Council in meeting the needs of the County and of its people to make the county a modern, innovative and climate friendly place, where its citizens and visitors are happy to work, live, visit and enjoy life.”

Mr Tiernan is a native of Cloone Village in County Leitrim and currently resides in County Longford with his wife Raquel and sons Sean and Conor.
