Flooding on a road
Cllr Enda McGloin asked Ballinamore Municipal District to service and clean all storm water drains in and around Drumshanbo town saying that "many of these drains are completely blocked with mud and debris and heavy rains and storms have resulted in flash flooding as recently as three weeks ago."
He added that he felt this action should form part of the climate action plan around the county.
He was advised that the District Office will carry out a full storm drain cleaning in the third quarter in the main thoroughfares in Drumshanbo and can then identify any blockages, if any, within the system.
Cllr McGloin said an area next to the food hub is "particularly bad" as well as another on Barrack's Square and that "with frequent flash floods, there is a concern".
He added that to clear the drain might require "more manual work to get that clay and residue out of there."
He was advised that the contractors are due out this week to "try and rectify the issue" and "hopefully it will clear the residue and if not, at least we have time before the winter to come back to it," Alison McKeon, assistant engineer said.
Cllr Brendan Barry supported the motion saying that there was a "bad issue with flooding" on the street last year.
Cllr McGloin also asked that the Ballinamore Municipal District look at the road subsidence along the R-207 (15) at Urbal, Ballinaglera further up at Clancy’s house and finally above Ballinaglera Hall saying there are concerns locally that this may lead to an accident.
The official response stated that the council have a climate action grant along this section of road at the approach in to Ballinaglera. "We have contacted the landowner and now have permission to carry out verge stablising works. It is anticipated that these works will be carried out in the third quarter of the year."
