Use of blocked off area could see 40 new spaces at SUH

A local councillor said that if any area currently cordoned off outside Sligo University Hospital (SUH) were to be utilised, it could provide 40 new car parking spaces for people attending services at the hospital.

Cllr Brendan Barry asked that the Ballinamore Municipal District contact management in Sligo University Hospital to find out if additional car parking can be provided close to the main entrance of the hospital where the mobile Cath Lab used to be.

He said 40 places could be provided in this area which has been fenced off for a considerable time, while no works appear to be happening.

“There are a lot of people there with mobility issues and wheelchairs and one thing and another and there are usually four or five cars lining up there trying to get a parking place but there is none available,” Cllr Barry said.
He said he believed the area referred to should be used for “patients and those with mobility issues” saying there should be “a lot more spaces there for people at the main entrance for people with mobility issues.”

He said that when people are “forced to go down to the main car park, they drive around in circles for ages and then have to get on a bus and it's just not suitable for people who are not mobile.”

Cllr Caillian Ellis supported the motion.

Cllr Barry was advised that his motion would be referred to the Regional Health Forum, West.
