Young Ireland international rower Gerald Nugent along with his rowing partner James Hurley won their first international rowing medal when they pipped England at the post in the Home International Rowing Championships Pairs, which took place for the first time in Lough Rinn last week.

Alongside Gerald was his proud father and fellow rower Paul: a moment of joy for both father and son. On the same day, the medal accidentally fell into the lake, prompting Paul, Ronan Gallagher, a local musician, Gerry Gilroy of the Drumsna Diving Club and his son, Ryan, to jointly search for the lost medal.
Last Saturday, August 12, Ronan, Brian Bohan, a local fisherman with good knowledge of Lough Rinn Lake, and divers Gerry and Ryan gathered to begin the search. Despite the weather conditions, they persisted and eventually found the lost medal.
The following day, they met with medal winner Gerald and his Dad in Lough Rinn, reunited them with the medal, and celebrated the good ending for all.
