Farmers are facing serious fodder issues this winter.
Cllr Paddy Farrell sought the support of the members of Leitrim County Council to call on the Department of Agriculture and the Minister, Charlie McConalogue to provide urgent fodder support “in this very difficult year.”
Tabling a notice of motion at this month's meeting of the local authority, Cllr Farrell said, “Many farmers have harvested no fodder yet due to poor ground conditions and restrictions. Some fodder that has been made in the last two months is of very poor feed value and will lead to severe animal welfare issues in the winter months.”
He said that the Department and Teagasc as well as the Minister for Agriculture have to give more support to farmers and suggested that meal vouchers be provided.
Cllr Mary Bohan seconded the motion which received the support of members.
