A number of people stationed in Leitrim carry fire arms
Cllr Sean McDermott asked about the possibility in the coming months of the armed unit or armed detectives not being available for duty during the hours of 4am and 8am.
"As Leitrim is a border county, I believe it is important that these officers are available during these times," the Glenfarne based councillor said.
Chief Supt Aidan Glacken, speaking at the County Leitrim Joint Policing Committee meeting, said An Garda Síochána are in existence for the past 101 years as a largely unarmed organisation and however they "do have the support of armed personnel on a 24/7 basis" and said that a number of people stationed in Leitrim carry firearms" as well as an armed support unit in Ballyshannon and Cavan town.
Cell need in Manorhamilton
Meanwhile, Cllr McDermott asked the meeting about the "issue of the availability of a cell at the Garda Station in Manorhamilton
Chief Superintendent Glacken responded that the question was raised by Cllr McDermott in March 2021 and noted there was a cell in Manorhamilton that was "deemed unsafe for use" and added that he has submitted a business case to Garda estate management "looking at our wide estate" adding he is due to meet with the section in the coming weeks and will raise the issue with them then.
