Marc MacSharry TD
Marc Mac Sharry TD has today announced he will not contest the next general election.
Mac Sharry said, “It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve in the Oireachtas since 2002. I am eternally grateful to all for the opportunity to serve as a TD and Senator over more than 21 years. I would like to thank everyone for their support and assistance.
“I look forward to continuing to work on behalf of the people of Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and North Roscommon between now and the conclusion of this administration.
“Through the years I have worked to the very best of my ability and now feel it is the correct time to open a new chapter in my life and pursue alternative opportunities."
Mac Sharry was elected and served in Seanad Eireann on 3 occasions between 2002 – 2016. He was elected to Dáil Eireann in 2016 and secured re-election in 2020.
MacSharry spent periods as a FF Seanad Spokesman on each of Marine, Finance, Health and Public Expenditure and later as Spokesman on Transport & Tourism in the Dáil.
He is best known for his straight-talking style as a member of the Committee of Investigation into the Banking Crisis (2013-2016) and his no-nonsense approach and robust questioning as a leading member of the Dáil's prestigious Public Accounts Committee 2016 - 2021.
He was also to the fore in bringing the World Rally Championship to Ireland in 2007 & 2009, which he helped ensure was headquartered in his native Sligo on both occasions.
MacSharry is known to have recently completed a ‘Research Masters’ (M.Phil) at University of Ulster and is expected to return to pursue a career in the private sector at the conclusion of the 33rd Dáil.
Before entering public life, MacSharry had worked extensively in private enterprise including food exports and property & financial services. He has three children.
