Cllr Enda McGloin
"I'm delighted with the answer," Cllr Enda McGloin said, after calling on Ballinamore Municipal District to request the Road Design Department to consider new road markings and a pedestrian safety study alongside a new tarmacadam surface around the Mayflower roundabout and junctions at Carricknabrack, Drumshanbo.
He was told that the District Office will also look at erecting additional roundabout signs and apply advance road lining strips at the approach from Drumkeeran. The Road Design Office will carry out a road safety audit when resources allow.
He continued that "there is a bit of an issue currently because school numbers have increased dramatically and funding has been granted to vocational schools; they are betwixt in terms of going forward to find a suitable location to build this extension on the current grounds."
He said that the number of prefabs at the school has risen and pupil numbers are rising "which is good, but on the down side, it has increased the number of pedestrians going over and back."
Cllr McGloin noted that funding had been granted for new basketball and volleyball courts at the location.
"When that development is done, there is even more of a reason for road design to consider that when rolling out their design; to take into consideration that will be actively used, hopefully in the next 12 months."
Cllr Brendan Barry said there are two "big issues at the roundabout, the traffic coming down from the school/Furnace Hill and the traffic coming in from the Drumkeeran/Arigna side."
He said, "The view is kind of blocked with the wall on the right-hand side coming in from the Drumkeeran road and the location of the pedestrian cross on the Dowra Road is quite close to the roundabout itself and there are people crossing the road and all of sudden a car is on top of them."
