I welcome the deferral of the residential zoned land tax - Cllr Paddy Farrell

Cllr Paddy Farrell

Cllr Paddy Farrell welcomed the deferral of the residential zoned land tax for a further 12 months, as new legislation is required, and asked for the support of members of the council to call on the Taoiseach and the Government to remove all land that is being genuinely and actively farmed from the Residential Zoned Land Tax (RZLT).

The liability date for the Residential Zoned Land Tax has been extended, so that farmers will not have to pay it until February 1, 2025.

This will allow for another annual mapping cycle to take place before landowners become subject to the tax.

During this period, landowners will be able to engage in the process and make a rezoning request to their local authority.

Cllr Farrell was speaking at the latest meeting of Leitrim County Council.

Cllr Padraig Fallon strongly supported the motion and said there is a "facility where land in certain villages and areas in Leitrim isn't excluded if it is being genuinely farmed and that should extend to land that's beside the large towns as well."
