The red curtain comes down on 20th Celebration for Carrigallen Youth Theatre

Carrigallen Youth Theatre bring the curtain down on their 20th year of celebration on Saturday, December 2, at 8pm and Sunday, December 3, at 3pm at the Corn Mill Theatre, with “Don’t Shoot The Messenger” by John Morton (devised by Kilkenny youth theatre).

It has been a very exciting 20 years of drama workshops, performances, trips, festivals. Feedback and reflections in this productions programme sums up what youth theatre means to the young people of our communities who have walked and journeyed the youth theatre experience.

The seed for youth theatre in Leitrim was sown with the arrival of former artists officer Caoimhin Corrigan, supporting and funding initially a group in Carrigallen in September 2003, and later Carrick-on-Shannon and Manorhamilton.

The foundation was solid in Carrigallen, and delighted to report today we still have a full junior and senior group.

Within the country of Leitrim there is currently 4 junior groups and 4 senior groups, Carrigallen, Leitrim Village, Manorhamilton and Bright Sparks, a new and exciting string to the bow of youth theatre in Leitrim works out of The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Youth Theatre only survives on having people with a love and passion for theatre, and a true understanding of the benefits of it to young people working and delivering drama workshops. A big part of its survival is funding and volunteers.

Thankfully, the arts department in Leitrim County Council current arts officer Philip Delamere and assistant arts officer for young people in the arts, Mary Blake, continues to fund and support youth theatre in Leitrim.

Youth Theatre Ireland also plays a vital role in support to volunteers on committee, facilitators, and assistants.

We look forward to having back former members of youth theatre, past facilitators and assistants to our performances at The Corn Mill Theatre over the weekend. Excitement and anticipation to what the future holds for youth theatre.
