Proposal to allow for better traffic movement in Drumshanbo

Proposal to allow for better traffic movement in Drumshanbo

Cllr Enda McGloin

Cllr Enda McGloin asked the Ballinamore Municipal District to consider works at the Mart Road car park, Drumshanbo to re-kerb and eliminate the footpath where the bus stop is, to allow better traffic flow and more car parking spaces.

He suggested: "Perhaps the Road Design Office would review the design here as action is required to reduce traffic congestion."

A Report by the Roads office said that the Road Design Office will review the situation, "however it is unlikely that the bus stop will be moved as it removes the current seating island while reducing the car park spaces."

Cllr McGloin said the bus currently stops at a designated bus parking area and said it was suggested to him that "the footpath be taken out and allow the bus to pull in and it would increase the number of parking spaces and the bus is out of the way to allow free-flowing traffic."

He said that the motion aimed at "giving us a little bit more parking and allowing better traffic flow; I'm not asking that the bus stop be moved but if we could design the road in such a way the bus could pull off the route to allow traffic behind it to move towards the town."

He added that it's a busy part of town and parking spaces were previously removed from the area.

Cllr Brendan Barry supported the motion and said it was "a bigger problem when two or three buses are there and vehicles parked on double yellow lines on the other side of the road and causing congestion."
