Speed limit may be extended in Ballinamore

Speed limit may be extended in Ballinamore

Speed limit may be changed so public lighting can be installed.

Cllr Gerry Dolan called on Ballinamore Municipal District to have the street lighting and the footpath extended out the Swanlinbar Road from Ballinamore before "there is a serious accident because there are a large number of houses out there and a lot of people walking, including children going to and from school."
Cllr Dolan, speaking at the latest municipal district meeting, said that, if necessary, the speed limit should be extended to Lisacarn.  All members supported the motion.
A report by the Roads office said there is no funding in the Roadworks Programme for extensions to public lighting and, in any event, it would not be our policy to provide public lighting outside the speed limits.

District engineer, Darragh O'Boyle said that, as the section of road referred to was outside the speed limit, it would be unlikely funding would be provided for the project.  "If you want to change the speed limit, that's probably the better option."

He said this is a reserved function and can go before members at the next Speed Limit Review.
