Leitrim road is so dangerous one lady will not drive on it

A van "went down seven foot" at Annaduff Glebe, just down from Drumcree cross

"I travel this road with a tractor on a regular basis and this is an extremely dangerous bit of road," said Cllr Enda Stenson at the most recent Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district meeting.

He said that a number of weeks ago, a van "went down seven foot. I don't know what the council can do; it's a very dangerous bit of road and we'll have to put up some barriers or something like that. I know one lady who will not drive that road."

Cllr Stenson said the road at Annaduff Glebe, just down from Drumcree cross, "is in a very dangerous state of repair now. I understand, it’s very boggy here and impossible to get a firm base.

"This road was fine when traffic volumes and transport loads were lighter, but now the sides are falling away. A barrier is needed along this road to prevent cars slipping down the embankment, as has happened already."

Cllr Sean McGowan supported the motion agreeing that "people are afraid to actually drive it because if they go off, God only knows where they'd end up."

Cllr Des Guckian also supported the motion saying it has deteriorated in recent times.

A report by the Roads office said the 1km section of the L-7430 at Annaduff Glebe received a CIS grant in 2023.

It added: "We have included an 800m section within our RIG grants in 2024. The road is on a bog rampart and will require strengthening under this grant. The introduction of a barrier system is very expensive and will only be used if the settlement reoccurs."

Cllr Stenson responded: "Is there anything more we can do because it is dangerous and I'm not over emphasising the fact."
