Announcement on plans for old Mohill vocational school due soon

Youngsters breaking into old school and barricades being sets up

Announcement on plans for old Mohill vocational school due soon

An announcement is to be made shortly regarding plans for the building by ETB

Cllr Thomas Mulligan asked that, following on from the announcement of funding for the old vocational school in Mohill by Minister Simon Harris, that the Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district call on the Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education Training Board (MSLETB) to outline what progress has been made on this project and when may it come fruition.

He noted that this announcement was made a year and a half ago and asked if the district could contact the MSLETB and "put some pressure on them" to initiate their plans for the school.

He continued: "It just appears the situation has gone dead and as well as that there have been youngsters breaking in there" and attempts were made to barricade the school against intruders.

Cllr Enda Stenson revealed that an announcement is to be made shortly regarding plans for the building and said that while it had initially been planned to develop a Youthreach centre at the former school, it is now going to be a "more expansive job" and "SOLAS (further education and training) have come on board".

He said the ETB are to meet in early March and that "a proper reply will be sent to you as to what is happening; it's absolutely not stalled. It's bigger now than it was initially going to be and is something Mohill will be proud of. It will move sooner rather than later," Cllr Stenson said.

Cllr Sean McGowan supported the motion.
