Cllr Felim Gurn said he has just been made aware of the first case of mica in the Manorhamilton municipal area.
Mica and pyrite are minerals found in the ground and in rocks that are excavated from quarries and used in building blocks. These minerals cause defects in building blocks, which lead to cracks and other problems in buildings and homes constructed with the defective blocks.
Speaking at the latest Manorhamilton municipal district meeting this week, he asked the council as well as local TDs to get the case highlighted for funding like the cases in Donegal, Sligo and Mayo saying it is important that this case is considered for funding under the national “Mica schemes.”
A grant scheme to support affected homeowners to remediate dwellings which have been damaged by the use of defective concrete blocks in its construction is available in Clare, Donegal, Limerick and Mayo and Cllr Gurn said this scheme now must be introduced in Leitrim.
Cllr Padraig Fallon noted that bricks have been brought in from "different jurisdictions" and suggested writing to the minister and "making him aware there is a possible instance of it in Leitrim."
Cllr Gurn agreed with this suggestion.
