As Leitrim continues to attract visitors and locals alike to its stunning Blue Ways, concerns have been raised regarding accessibility to public toilet facilities, especially along the boardwalk in Drumshanbo and the walks around Garadize Lough.

Adam Ó Ceallaigh, the Green Party Candidate for the Ballinamore LEA, emphasises the importance of considering the diverse needs of all individuals when developing public amenities.

He notes, "Access to public toilets is not just a convenience but a necessity for many, and it's crucial that these spaces are inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities or needs."

In addition to emphasising the importance of accessibility in public amenities, Adam Ó Ceallaigh has heard this issue raised regularly by the public.

He highlights the frustration and concern voiced by community members who face barriers when accessing public spaces; many often need help due to needing a toilet nearby.

Adam calls on Leitrim County Council to be more conscious of these needs in the future and to take proactive steps to rectify the issues that are currently in place.

As a voice for the community, Adam urges local authorities to prioritise accessibility and inclusivity in their planning and decision-making processes. By actively engaging with residents and taking their concerns into account, Leitrim County Council can ensure that future developments align with the diverse needs of all individuals, including those requiring accessible public toilets.

The current situation highlights a significant gap in accessibility. Many public toilets in these areas are not wheelchair accessible, making it challenging for individuals with mobility impairments to access the public space. Additionally, those with young children in buggies face similar difficulties, as do caregivers who require baby-changing facilities.

The lack of accessible toilets not only poses physical challenges but also impacts the overall experience of enjoying these beautiful outdoor spaces.

Visitors and residents alike should be able to explore Leitrim's natural wonders without the added stress or discomfort caused by inadequate facilities.

Adam has been in touch with Leitrim County Council to rectify this issue.
