Tidy Towns shouldn't have to maintain these areas

Cllr Frank Dolan asked who will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the green areas in Manorhamilton.

Cllr Frank Dolan asked who will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the green areas provided in the recent pavement works carried out in Manorhamilton.

A report by the Roads office said the roads section is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all areas within the public road.

Cllr Dolan added: "People are out walking and asking who is going to maintain these green areas. If they're not maintained, they're far better concreted."

Cllr Gurn supported the motion and said he was contacted by a man "about the maintenance of the existing footpaths and he said he never saw a town like Manorhamilton and the amount of square footage we have of paving."

He said that the Tidy Towns are being looked upon to maintain the areas adding that to seal the area properly, it could cost up to €1,500 for "one small area".

He said, "I don't know why in our towns and villages, we can't get a small sweeper; the footpaths are wide now."

Cllr Dolan said it was unfair to expect Tidy Towns to "do all the work they are expected to do; there will have to be a policy or structure put in place to look after these areas."

Cllr Sean McDermott and Cllr Padraig Fallon both supported the motion.
