Thresholds for social and affordable housing need to be increased , says Cllr Padraig Fallon
Cllr Padraig Fallon once again stressed he believed the income thresholds for social and affordable housing need to be increased and noted that in many cases, people are paying rents that could cover a mortgage.
He noted that some individuals working who can't obtain a mortgage and also don't have access to a local authority home are paying exorbitant rents that in many instances would "pay a mortgage".
A reply from Minister Darragh O'Brien which was read out at the full council meeting held in Kinlough noted that from January 2023, the income threshold for social housing was increased by €5,000 in every local authority and stated that "the department is awaiting detailed research examining the existing income limit in the context of the current market and population conditions."
However, Cllr Fallon suggested writing to the minister again and "urging him to make this a matter of priority" saying that he did not believe this topic required another review or examination.
