James Gilmartin, a new independent candidate for the Manorhamilton Electoral Area, launched his campaign on Saturday, March 9, night in The Glens Centre in Manorhamilton.
James, a teacher in Magh Ene College in Bundoran and a part time mixed enterprise farmer in Manorhamilton announced recently that he would contest the forthcoming Local Elections for the Manorhamilton Municipal District.
Sligo-Leitrim TD Marian Harkin launched his campaign saying James was a man who loved the area and its people and she believed he would make a real positive difference if elected this June.
She went on to say that James is passionate, committed and competent and that these traits will be central to why he can become a real effective public representative for the people of North Leitrim.
James, who spoke to a full house, outlined some of the reasons he is running in the forthcoming elections. Community togetherness and building on the example of those who have come before us are central to his vision in creating and enhancing a vibrant and resilient community.
He spoke about a balanced and fair approach to housing in the area alongside supports for agriculture which he feels is the backbone of the rural economy.
He placed real emphasis on assisting young farmers as they try to get started on their farming careers. He discussed the importance of quality recreational and cultural facilities for the youth of the area and the need for enhanced amenities and services in attracting people into our towns and villages.
He highlighted how critical family carers are to our communities and how they need full support with regards to respite, care hours and access to carers allowance which is not means tested. As chairperson of Treasure Leitrim he stressed the importance of protecting the area against the threats of outside corporate interests such as gold mining and monoculture forestry and was steadfast in his resolve in ensuring this precious and unique place is left unspoilt for those coming after us.
He thanked his family, friends and colleagues who have supported him in his decision to run and he asked those present to help spread the word to help get him elected.
He concluded, "Politics is ultimately about people and place and delivering a positive change for them. Our community needs a strong independent voice , a voice that can advocate for those that need it most, a voice that can bridge the gap between the community and the council. To that end I feel very strongly that I am that voice”.
