Leitrim meeting hears road is "sinking at an alarming rate"
Cllr Gerry Dolan called on the Ballinamore municipal district to have repair works done on road L3378, where it "is sinking at an alarming rate at the crossroads leading to Shancurry."
The official response said that the road which links "wooden bridge" to R280 has a good pavement structure. It is prone to settlement nearer the R280 Junction. We will apply for a Climate Adaptation Grant in 2025."
Cllr Dolan said that there is "also no grass verge along the road and it's havoc on a Friday evening; there's nowhere to pull in; if some pull-in spaces could be put along the road for traffic to be able to get by."
Cllr Brendan Barry supported the motion and said that "further up the road, there was a restoration improvement grant and there is a drop off the tarmac there along the road." He said car wheels have gone off the side and the wishbone has been caught on the tarmac and they've had to get pulled off the verge in several places up there.
Leitrim County Council District Engineer, Darragh O'Boyle responded that there is a bog rampart just off the R280. "We did build it up about four years ago but it has gone down again. I will look for a Climate Adaptation Grant."
He added that he needed to talk to the landowners also.
Mr O'Boyle said that the district office will put up delineators in the meantime, "and hopefully, we'll get the Climate Adaptation Grant next year."
He concluded: "We will have to pipe that drain and build up on it and I can't do that unless I have the farmers on board."
