One of the items dumped was a leather couch, says Cllr Mulligan
Once dumping starts, "it tends to continue so I would ask that there would be a clean up there; it's not a major job," said Cllr Thomas Mulligan who requested that dumping of furniture and household waste on local road L344820 in the townland of Cornee, Mohill be removed and appropriate signage be erected to prevent similar incidents.
Addressing the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting this month, Cllr Mulligan said: "It's a lovely walkway and used extensively for people who want a longer walk."
A report by the head of finance and water services said that the matter will be investigated by the environment department and appropriate action will be taken.
Cathaoirleach of the meeting, Cllr Enda Stenson said that "people come from all over and dump mattresses and furniture; it's disgraceful."
He added: "What some people do is an absolute scandal."
Cllr Des Guckian asked if the motion could also request that cameras be installed at the location.
Cllr Stenson said that "we can't put cameras everywhere; this happens in bogland, rural areas; we can't be big brother watching everybody. People have got to grow up and act responsibly and if someone knows who does it, they should report them."
Cllr Sean McGowan also supported the motion and said it is down to education.
"People are dumping and have no regard whatsoever and it's wrong," he said.
