Percy's Party make their triumphant return to Roscommon, celebrating the 170th Anniversary of Percy French, who was born on May 1st 1854, in Clooneyquinn at Woodland Café, Strokestown Park.

This year marks a special milestone as enthusiasts gather once again to honour the timeless legacy of the renowned Irish songwriter, poet, and entertainer Percy French.

170 years after his birth, barely a sing-song takes place in this country that doesn't feature at least a couple of Percy French songs.

Who doesn't know the famous opening line 'Oh Mary, this London's a wonderful sight', the beautiful ballad of 'Come Back Paddy Reilly' or the rousing 'Phil the Fluter's Ball'. Perhaps not everyone can identify the composer of these famous Irish folk songs, but most will recognise the lyrics and the melodies.

Scheduled to take place on the 170th Anniversary of his birth, May 1st, 2024, this eagerly anticipated event promises a vibrant tapestry of music and community spirit, paying homage to Percy French's incomparable contributions to Ireland's cultural heritage.

Percy's Party at the Woodland Café, Strokestown Park, poignantly reminds us of Percy French's enduring influence, whose works continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.

French captured the essence of Irish life and folklore through his poignant lyrics, captivating melodies, and witty prose, endearing himself to generations of music fans.

Attendees will revel in the performances by the esteemed Leitrim Percy French Society.

Tish Dunleavy and Frank Cadam founded the County Leitrim Percy French Society after realising that, despite his extensive musical repertoire, French was underappreciated and underpromoted.

The society has performed in theatres all across the country, including two sell-out shows in the National Concert Hall. They also featured on the BBC's Britain's Great Railway Journeys,

This charming show will now be performed in the Woodland Cafe at Strokestown Park House to celebrate the 170th Birthday of Percy French.

The show is performed by 9 members of the County Leitrim Percy French Society in period costume, with Frank Cadam taking the role of the great man himself in a manner authentic to the spirit and arrangements in which French himself performed.

The group also dons traditional outfits from the French time to really bring the show to life.

Songs are linked with stories from Percy French's life that explain the background and inspiration behind the music, giving the show warmth and authenticity.

The show is under the direction of Tish Dunleavy as musical director and presented in a fun-loving and good-humoured way, with audience participation welcomed and encouraged along the way.

"We are thrilled to welcome back the Percy French Anniversary Celebrations to County Roscommon," said Aine Butler, Creative Communities Engagement Officer at Roscommon County Council.

"This event holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike, celebrating the enduring legacy of one of Ireland's most beloved cultural icons. We invite you to join us for an evening filled with music, merriment, and memories that will last a lifetime," she added.

This event is funded by Roscommon County Council under the Creative Ireland Programme, in collaboration with the National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park.
