Leitrim GAA fans are reminiscing about Micheál O’Muircheartaigh's iconic 1994 Connacht Championship line.
After Leitrim's second ever Connacht Championship win, O’Muircheartaigh said, "There will be many a Leitrim man looking down from the veranda of heaven right now."
GAA fans and fans of O'Muircheartaigh himself took to social media to remember the man and his beautiful way with words.
One X user commented, "Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh describing the scene moments after Leitrim won the Connacht championship in 1994 for only the second time. A gifted and unique broadcaster and a gentleman."
Another said, "When Leitrim won their second ever Connacht Championship in 1994 Micheál O’Muircheartaigh on commentary said it was easy to imagine the Leitrim fans that had gone on to their eternal reward leaning over the banisters in heaven watching the drama unfold."
Another fan commented, "An absolute legend of the GAA... we will always remember Micheál talking about Leitrim supporters who had passed away, leaning over the bannisters in heaven, watching the drama of 1994 unfold. May he rest in peace.
"No one will ever come close to Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. From the hall travelling up the pitch to the relatives of the player, the woman who washed the jersey to the man marking the pitch, everyone mattered. And yes he was so right about Leitrim Gaels looking down in 94," commented another.
O'Muircheartaigh was a broadcaster with RTÉ between 1949 - when he was tasked with providing an all-Irish commentary on the Railway Cup Final on St Patrick's Day - and 2010, and is widely considered one of the best GAA commentators of all time.
According to RTÉ, he once said commentating GAA was "an honour" and that his work enabled him "to meet and get to know generations of great sportsmen and women and many of those associated with them".
Taoiseach Simon Harris commented in the wake of the news of his death and described him as "a gentleman to his fingertips".
