Cllr Brendan Barry proposed the motion at July's meeting for Ballinamore M.D.

Call for viewing bay and scenic enhancements at Cormongan

Ballinamore Municipal District has heard a proposal to seek funding for a viewing bay at Cormongan, offering a picturesque overlook of Lough Allen.

Cormongan, located on the eastern shores of Lough Allen is a spot that offers a great view of the lake and its surrounding landscapes.

Cllr Brendan Barry requested that Ballinamore M.D. secure funding for a viewing bay at Cormongan. Cllr Barry also asked that the Council work with landowners at Cleighranmore to improve the views of the lake at that location also.

Commenting on the proposed viewing bay, Cllr Barry said: "People had raised it with me in the past. At one stage you used to be able to see some of that area and it's gone overgrown with trees and shrubbery.

"There is space alongside the road if there was a spot made that cars could pull in, it's on a high vantage point right beside the shore and you'd be able to see across the whole of Arigna and mountains and down towards Drumkeerin and a lot of Lough Allen."

Cllr Barry suggested that creating a viewing bay at Cormongan could become a notable landmark in the county, where people might go to take photographs like they do at other popular landmarks around the country.

"Lough Allen is very well connected with county Leitrim and when people think of Leitrim they do think of Lough Allen. It's one of the main three lakes on the river Shannon.

"If there was a viewing bay there, it could become an iconic picture," Cllr Barry said.

The Roads department issued a reply to his motion explaining that should a suitable funding opportunity arise, Leitrim County Council could explore the possibility of installing a viewing bay and appropriate informational signage along the R207 at Cormongan.

"It might tick the boxes for the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS)," Cllr Barry remarked.

"Even a picnic bench, if there was a spot for cyclists or walkers to pull in there and be able to rest and enjoy the views."
