Speeding concerns frequently arise during Council meetings, and on July 22, the Ballinamore Municipal District was alerted to yet another issue.
Ballinamore M.D. was asked to consider measures along the R207 at Ballinaglera Village to calm the traffic from Rynn's Bar to St Hugh’s GAA park, in a motion proposed by Cllr Enda McGloin.
Cllr McGloin requested that signage be reviewed and for Gardaí to be notified of the abuse of the current speed limits.
"I heard concerns about the speed here during the election campaign," Cllr McGloin said.
"The concern we had is that there's a considerable amount of people that have kids that would cycle to the village and then onto that road, the main road to Enniskillen and Carrick-on-Shannon.
The current speed is 60 kilometres per hour, which Cllr McGloin feels is not being obeyed by any means.
"I prompted the Council to review matters along there and see can they possibly look at enhanced signage but in particular I asked engineers to mention it to the Gardaí when they meet to ask if they'd consider some sort of mobile speed control there.
"We all agree that if there were speed checks on occasion, people would become aware it's a black spot for speed checks and consequently they may slow down then in that regard," Cllr McGloin said.
The Roads department said that the signage in the area is clear, and the issue of speeding in this area should be discussed at the Joint Policing Committee.
"I'd like to see the Joint Policing Committee look at increased signage and actions in terms of speed, for example rumble strips.
"I'd also like to see that they would identify it to the Gardaí as a potential issue of speed, and that they in turn would carry out over the course of six months potential speed checks and that would become the norm for a period of time at least," Cllr McGloin explained.
"When places are named for regular speed checks, people tend to be aware of that and slow down subsequently."
