Leitrim Animal Welfare clinic rescues three abandoned donkeys

A Leitrim-based animal rescue organisation has saved three "neglected" donkeys from the wild after finding the poor animals abandoned.

Alongside fellow animal rescue organization Hungry Horse Outside, Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre successfully rescued the three donkeys in Leitrim who were in poor condition and suffering from overgrown hooves.

In a post shared on social media, the group said that the animals had no access to shelter, and as such their hooves had not been maintained and they were malnourished.

Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre explained in their post online that donkeys, unlike horses, have feet adapted for dry, stony environments. In lush, wet pastures like those in Ireland, their feet can become soft, leading to painful foot diseases. Proper hoof care is absolutely crucial for their health.

As they age, issues like arthritis, dental disease, foot problems, and breathing issues can easily go unnoticed, affecting their quality of life.

"It’s essential to ensure both young and older donkeys are pain-free and comfortable," the animal welfare group said.

"They have unique physical, mental, and emotional needs. For instance, their coats aren’t waterproof, so they need dry, safe shelters with soft bedding, clean drinking water, and straw to stay warm and healthy".

All three donkeys are now safe and "free from neglect" according to the group's post.

"Your support helps us provide the care these beautiful creatures need. Thank you for being part of this journey with us!"
