A Leitrim animal rescue organisation has reunited a lost dog with its owners after it managed to run over 30km from home during a storm.

Last Sunday, during thunderstorms which struck nationwide, a frightened collie in Boyle, Co Roscommon got loose and went missing.

His worried owner reportedly had been tirelessly searching for him until Tuesday, when Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre received a call about a stray collie in Tarmon, Co Leitrim.

Speaking on the situation, the animal rescue centre explained: "We were hopeful he might be microchipped, and to our relief, he was!"

"We quickly checked his chip number and contacted his owners. Astonishingly, this brave collie had traveled over 33km from Boyle, Co.Roscommon to Tarmon, Co.Leitrim since Sunday."

Thanks to his microchip, the collie is now safe and will be happily reunited with his family.

"Microchipping your pet is crucial," Leitrim Animal Welfare Centre explained. "It provides a permanent way of identifying your pet and ensures that if they ever get lost, there’s a much higher chance of being reunited."

To encourage more pet owners to microchip their animals, the animal rescue centre is offering a special rate of €10 for microchipping.

Those looking to avail of the service can contact the centre by phone at 071 964 8300 or through their Facebook page.
