1954 - 2024: Just over a week and counting! This correspondent still wishes to hear from anyone in the Newtownmanor area or associated with the area, who is or is going to be 70 this year. The local community is having an Inter-generational Family Friendly Social Gathering on Sunday September 8, 2024 in the afternoon; between 3-00 and 5-00pm.
It is wished / hoped that everybody who was born in 1954 and has any association with the local area will be involved in this social gathering. In order to acknowledge / celebrate this ‘coming of age’ on the part of these local figures it is proposed that the local community have a communal celebration of the fact of our friends and neighbours reaching the proverbial ‘three score and ten’; it is without doubt a significant milestone on life’s journey and one worthy of celebration!
Therefore, on Sunday September 8, 2024 there will be an Inter-generational Family Friendly Social Gathering for all concerned (the individuals, their families, their friends and neighbours, the whole community); there will be tea, there will be cake, there may be music, there might be fun and games! The important point is that you note the date in your diary; you keep the afternoon free and most importantly you attend Newtownmanor Hall between 3-5-00pm! If you were born in 1954, make sure that you attend and bring all of your family, friends and neighbours with you. It will be an occasion to remember!
Marian Year 1954: 1954 was also a year of special celebration in the Catholic Church. Throughout the Catholic World 1954 was celebrated as a Marian Year. Pope Pius XII designated that 1954 be a Marian year, the first in the Catholic Church’s history, to commemorate the centenary of the definition of the dogma of ‘The Immaculate Conception’ and the more recent dogma of ‘The Assumption’.
In Ireland this resulted in 1954 being a great year for the construction of outdoor shrines and monuments. Half a mile up the road from my house, there is a cross on Benbo Hill, which was constructed in 1954; and five miles away, in the Glencar Parish of St. Osnat’s Church, where my mother was born, there is a sizeable roadside shrine venerating the BVM (Blessed Virgin Mary).
There are many in our local community who would wish to acknowledge the 70th anniversary of the Marion Year of 1954. To this end, anyone who wishes to do so can gather at the Glencar Marian Shrine on Sunday September 8, (The Feast Day of The Birth of Mary) at 2-00pm. The Glencar Shrine is far more readily accessible to all ages than trying to clamber up the side of Benbo across uncertain terrain.
There will be a brief prayer ceremony after which we can all adjourn to Newtownmanor Hall, to celebrate with our friends and neighbours the joys and blessings of living here, in this very special place!
