Fine Gael has selected Deputy Frank Feighan to contest the Sligo-Leitrim constituency in the upcoming General Election.

Deputy Feighan was chosen by party members during a convention held on Sunday at the Clayton Hotel in Sligo, chaired by Minister Peter Burke TD. This selection brings the total number of Fine Gael General Election candidates to 34 across 22 constituencies.

Feighan defeated John Perry by 352 votes to 77. Thomas Walsh had earlier withdrawn as a candidate.

Expressing his gratitude, Deputy Feighan stated, “I am honoured to have been selected to represent Fine Gael in Sligo-Leitrim. With years of political experience and having served as a Minister of State during this term, I am confident in my ability to represent the people of Sligo-Leitrim effectively."

“Fine Gael is committed to building a fair and compassionate society, with a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship and supporting local businesses. I am dedicated to advocating for our community on these important issues.”

“My track record in addressing community concerns shows my commitment to finding practical solutions. I pledge to work tirelessly to meet the challenges we face. I look forward to engaging with residents across Sligo-Leitrim and asking for their number one vote.”

However, not everyone views Fine Gael’s strategy positively. Former Sinn Féin Councillor Séadhna Logan, criticized the party’s approach on X, saying, “Fine Gael, with their flip-flopping and unconfirmed final candidate numbers and strategy, shows they are cautious. It is unlikely that they will all run one-candidate strategies, and if they do, it shows stagnation and no confidence in their base.”
