Last Saturday, Carrick-on-Shannon saw 680 out of 700 registered
walkers complete the annual Carrick Camino Walk, a challenging 34 km
trek that has become a highlight in the local calendar. The event,
held on the 31st of August 2024, was a resounding success, attracting
participants from near and far who came to enjoy its scenic beauty and
camaraderie.
However, the day was disrupted by an unfortunate incident. Early in
the morning, a bus carrying 56 passengers slid off the road and
overturned in the Derreendooey area between Keadue and Knockvicar in
north Roscommon, around 7 AM. Gardaí attended the scene, and while six
or seven people were taken to a hospital in Sligo for treatment, no
serious injuries have been reported.
One of the event organizers said the bus passengers safely exited through the emergency exit at the
back, with the help of nurses on board. One passenger described a
frightening moment when a branch pierced through a window, narrowly
missing her face.
Despite the chaos, the remaining 47 passengers regrouped and continued
with the walk, showcasing their resilience and determination. Their
ability to push forward and complete the trek highlighted the event's
spirit of perseverance and community. A Garda investigation is still ongoing.
