Motion for Leitrim ladies civic reception criticised as ‘populism’ by councillor

A proposal to host a civic reception to recognise the achievements of the Leitrim ladies football team was roundly supported at the recent meeting of Leitrim County Council, but there was one different opinion on the gesture. 

The Leitrim ladies are set to receive a civic reception in their honour after a motion was passed at September’s Council meeting.

The reception will take place in early October, to celebrate the win against Tyrone in the All-Ireland Intermediate Championships which took place on August 4.

The proposal, made by Cllr Mary Bohan, received broad support from the assembly, with the exception of one councillor who opposed the idea of holding a civic reception.

Independent Councillor Des Guckian, pictured above, of Carrick-on-Shannon expressed a differing opinion which was promptly dismissed by other councillors.

“I think this is populism and a bit opportunistic of a motion. The match and the campaign for those girls was outstanding, and we’re all very proud of them but this is jumping on the bandwagon,” Cllr Guckian said.

“The ladies have a fundraiser to help fund their senior campaign for next year, and I’m proposing that the County Council grant a minimum of €10,000 to this fund.”

Cllr Guckian’s suggestion was met with disappointment from other council members.

“We cannot give a civic reception for them which they deserve unless we put a motion before the Council," Cllr Bohan said. 

“For you to accuse me of jumping on the bandwagon is ridiculous,” Cllr Bohan added.

“Cllr Guckian’s remarks don’t surprise me in any way. If this is the carry on of this councillor going forward it’s very disappointing,” Cllr Prior commented.

“All I’m asking for is a practical alternative which will certainly help the ladies in the coming year,” Cllr Guckian responded.

Cathaoirleach Paddy O’Rourke called out Cllr Guckian’s behaviour over the course of the meeting.

“I thought you had reached the heights of how mean spirited you could be but you have surpassed yourself,” he said.

“In other words, I shouldn’t hold an opinion,” Cllr Guckian replied.

October 3 is being considered as a possible date for the civic reception for the Leitrim ladies.
