Calls for traffic solutions prompt Leitrim County Council to review Mohill signage

Leitrim County Council will consider incorporating additional signage at L5550-0 at Broom St, Mohill.

A motion proposed by Cllr Des Guckian at September’s Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting asked to implement suitable and substantial solutions to slow down the traffic passing up and down the road L5550-0 past the Olimotion Engineering Works, at Broom St, Mohill.

“This section of the road is being used as a rat run by vehicles travelling between Cloone and Mohill,” Cllr Guckian said.

“This is a major problem that just cannot be ignored. There is no use in waiting until someone is badly injured or killed.”

Íde, a six-month old newborn, has been battling meningitis and fluid in her brain since birth, which has taken a huge toll on her family.

A reply from Darragh O’Boyle, District Engineer said that speed on that road will be reduced this November. 

“It’s a rural area so the idea of putting speed ramps to slow down traffic isn’t an option. 

“There are other possible solutions such as putting in rumble strips,” Cllr Guckian argued.

“Reducing the speed limit won’t have any effect considering the current speed limit is being exceeded is the issue,” Cllr Reynolds commented.

Cllr Guckian asked if better signage could be put in place on the road.

“We will reduce the speed on that road from eighty to sixty. We can look into signage; there's no problem with that. We can put in additional signage on that road,” Mr O’Boyle concluded.
