Leitrim County Council responds to Aughavas safety concerns

St Joseph's Aughavas

The lack of a speed sign near the St Joseph’s National School and St Joseph’s Church in Aughavas will soon be addressed as these areas will go under a speed review, Ballinamore municipal district has heard.

Cllr Paddy O’Rourke called on Ballinamore MD to provide a footpath from the church to the car park, adjacent to the new cemetery and also to reconfigure the bridge parapet to provide safe passage for pedestrians.

“These works should be undertaken in a timely manner to coincide with whatever timescale is required for the adjoining landscape to become established well in advance of 2029, when St Joseph’s Church will be celebrating 200 years of dedication,” Cllr O’Rourke said.

A reply from the roads department suggested that the best way forward would be for the local community or parish council in Aughavas to apply for funding such as the Town and Village or CLÁR scheme.

District engineer Darragh O’Boyle informed Ballinamore MD that the absence of no speed sign in the area will be remedied as areas are subject to speed reviews.

Mr O’Boyle also told Cllr O’Rourke that there would be a reluctance to interfere with the bridge.

Cllr O’Rourke emphasised that there had been several serious accidents and numerous near misses.

He informed Ballinamore MD that he will liaise with relevant parties in Aughavas to determine the best approach for implementing what he considers essential safety measures.
