The Holey Soles Hill Walking Group, in collaboration with guide Dave Lawless, is hosting its annual Fr. Ed Memorial fundraiser on Sunday, 6th October. This year’s event will support the Warmi Huasi project in Peru, which works to improve the lives of vulnerable communities.

Speaking about the event, Nóirin Clancy from the Holey Soles group said, “This walk is not just about coming together for a beautiful day outdoors; it's about making a real difference to people’s lives in Peru. All funds raised will go directly to support the Warmi Huasi project, which provides essential services to vulnerable families.”

The fundraiser offers two walking options, both set in the picturesque surroundings of Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim. Registration will take place at St. Michael’s National School starting at 10:30 AM, with the hill walk beginning at 11:00 AM and the ramble at 11:15 AM. “There’s no need to register beforehand,” Clancy explains. “Participants can simply turn up on the day, and we’ll have everything set up to get everyone on their way. It’s a fun, inclusive event that’s open to all, whether you’re an experienced hill walker or someone looking for a more gentle ramble.”

The 8km ramble along Barrs Line promises a relaxed walk with panoramic views of Glenfarne Valley, Thur Mountain, and Cuilcagh Mountain. According to Clancy, "It’s the perfect route for those who want to take things a little easier while still enjoying the beautiful surroundings. You don’t have to be a seasoned walker to enjoy this one.”

For those looking for a challenge, the 10km hill walk follows a historic route over Thur Mountain, providing sweeping views of Sliabh an Iarainn, Cuilcagh Mountain, and Lough MacNean. Walkers will be transported by minibus to McManus Quarry to begin the hike.

“This route holds a special significance,” Clancy explains. “It retraces the footsteps of local people from pre-famine times who carried coffins over the mountain to Kilmakerrill Graveyard. We walk this path today in solidarity with the people of Peru, who, like our ancestors, continue to show resilience in the face of hardship.”

After the walk, participants can enjoy a short film titled Kilmakerrill Graveyard, produced by Leitrim County Council’s Heritage Office. “The film tells the poignant story of the local history behind the route,” says Clancy. “It’s a fitting way to end the day and reflect on the deeper connections between our past and the communities we’re supporting in Peru.”

All donations raised will go directly to the Warmi Huasi project. “Every cent raised on the day will help the people of Peru," Clancy emphasizes. "For those who can’t join us, there’s still the opportunity to contribute through our Eventbrite page, where people can 'buy a ticket' and support the cause remotely.”

By joining this walk, participants will not only experience the beauty of Glenfarne but also make a tangible difference to communities in need.
