Concerns raised over ‘severe’ speed ramps in Leitrim

Some speed ramps in County Leitrim have been described as very severe by road users, Ballinamore Municipal District has heard.

Sinn Féin councillor Brendan Barry requested specifications for ramps and pedestrian crossings in Leitrim, including the maximum slope, height and width of the area designated for pedestrians.

A response from the Roads department explained that ramps and pedestrian crossings within the county are designed in accordance with a guidance document titled ‘Traffic Management Guidelines - Section 6 Traffic Calming for Existing Roads.’

The reply further stated that all ramps installed by the Council are provided with clear signs and road markings to give road users adequate notice of the ramp or crossing ahead.

In some areas, the height of the road and footpaths may need to be changed slightly to make crossing points safer for vulnerable road users.

Leitrim County Council can examine any ramp or crossing that may be causing issues with vehicles, but noted that the purpose of these features is to slow down traffic to protect vulnerable road users.
