A call was raised in Carrick-on-Shannon’s Municipal District meeting to relocate bins in the town to take into account potential littering areas.
Cllr Cormac Flynn requested Leitrim County Council conduct an audit of the location of public bins, particularly at bus shelters, Local Link pick-up points along with popular walking routes.
“I’m not requesting any more bins, but maybe to look at some of the bins that have very low usage and relocate some of them to the more heavily trafficked and used areas in our towns and villages,” Cllr Flynn explained.
Cllr Flynn’s motion was seconded by Cllr Reynolds and Cllr McGowan.
“I’d like to pay testament to the Tidy Towns and the work that they do, this is a bigger issue that hasn’t been raised quicker,” Cllr Reynolds said.
“They do great work with the litter in the area and there’s a lot of development that’s gone on in the town, it’s just good to reassess where everything is.”
Cllr Guckian observed that individuals are using public bins for their personal waste and criticised young people he has seen discarding litter along the roadside.
District engineer Darragh O’Boyle told councillors there is no problem relocating bins in the town.
“We have no issue relocating bins in Carrick-on-Shannon,” Mr O’Boyle said.
“In my point of view, young people aren’t the issue here, they’re quite good at using bins its other people that misuse and mistreat these bills,” Mr O’Boyle said in response to Cllr Guckian’s comment/
“If we do get it on camera we can prosecute these people.”
A response from the Roads department explained that the district office has provided a set number of solar compaction bins in Carrick-on-Shannon.
They wish to maintain this number, as they believe these bins are susceptible to misuse from household waste disposal, which can lead to overflow and littering issues.
“We can adjust the location of the existing bins and relocate at the Parkland and Campus Bus Stops," the reply concluded.
