Drumshanbo’s Shed Distillery marks 150,000th visitor, fueling local business growth.
The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim, celebrated a significant milestone as it welcomed its 150,000th visitor—Kildare native Heidi Lawless. She arrived with friends to what has become a thriving tourist hub, driven by Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, a product that has significantly bolstered the local economy. This milestone was marked by a welcoming committee that included Leitrim Cathaoirleach Paddy O'Rourke, alongside distillery owners PJ and Denise Rigney, and various local business and tourism leaders.
PJ's daughter Roisin, who manages the distillery’s Visitor Experience, believes its success comes from the brand's authenticity.
Roisin explains, “It’s been an exponential journey. When my dad started this, no one could have predicted how fast it would grow, but there’s something about the brand that really resonates with people. We’re based in Drumshanbo, a tiny community, and I think people feel that connection, even if they’re halfway across the world. It’s more than just a gin – it’s a story.”
Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is crafted with an attention to detail that sets it apart in an overcrowded market. “Every drop of this gin is made right here in Drumshanbo. We don’t outsource, we don’t cut corners. My dad designed everything – from the stills to the recipes,” Roisin says proudly. “He’s been in the drinks industry for over 42 years, and this is the culmination of all that experience.”
The Shed Distillery, which employed only two people at its inception in 2014, now provides over 100 local jobs, contributing significantly to the once-struggling rural economy. The distillery’s employment extends across its production lines, the Jackalope Café, and the Curious Gift Shop, creating a local business ecosystem that has helped transform Drumshanbo’s economic landscape.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome our 150,000th visitor,” said PJ Rigney founder of The Shed Distillery. “It is a true testament to the power of the passion and dedication of our team and the incredible support of the local community. We’re honoured to have become the top vistor attraction across the Shannonside region.”
In 2023, The Shed attracted a record 50,000 visitors, making it the top tourist attraction in the Shannonside region. Notably, 70% of these visitors are from overseas, contributing to a broader 11% rise in international tourism in Leitrim and its surrounding areas.
Drumshanbo, once regarded as a relatively quiet town, has seen a noticeable uptick in commercial activity thanks to The Shed’s success. Local accommodation providers, restaurants, and retailers say they are increasingly reliant on the footfall generated by the distillery.
The Shed Distillery has proven that, with the right product and strategy, even a small town can become a destination with a booming local economy.
