Carrigallen Vocational School.
Leitrim County Council has granted conditional planning permission for the installation of temporary modular units at Carrigallen Vocational School, located in Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim. The project, led by the Mayo, Sligo, and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB) under the direction of Declan Conboy, aims to expand the school’s facilities to better accommodate Special Educational Needs (SEN) students and enhance general-purpose and science classroom resources. The council’s conditional decision was issued on October 30, 2024, and includes four specific requirements that must be met for the development to proceed.
The approved development consists of several modular structures intended to address immediate educational needs within the school community. One of the modular units will feature three SEN classrooms along with a multi-purpose classroom, all authorized for a five-year period. Another modular building will provide a dedicated science room, also approved for a five-year term, to support the growing demand for science instruction. Additionally, a general-purpose classroom will be established in a separate modular unit, likewise authorized for five years. As part of the project, all essential connections to public services and site works will be undertaken to ensure the modular units are fully operational and integrated into the school’s infrastructure.
The planning application, filed under reference number 2460179, was submitted on September 10, 2024, and validated on the same date. Originally, the council set the decision due date for November 4, 2024, but approval was granted by October 30, 2024. As a retention application, this temporary setup will help Carrigallen Vocational School adapt to current demands, providing flexibility for future adjustments while ensuring the school is equipped with the necessary resources to meet both general and specialized educational needs. The public had an opportunity to submit comments on the application by October 14, 2024, with the council’s conditional approval now allowing the school to proceed with this strategic expansion plan.
