Declan Nerney is a beloved name in Irish country music, particularly among locals who’ve followed his illustrious career for decades. From his iconic hit The Marquee in Drumlish to his latest tracks, Declan’s music paints vivid portraits of Irish life—its people, places, and memories.
His songs, rich in local history and culture, go beyond catchy tunes; they tell heartfelt stories. “Most of my songs are about the people around me, whether they’re sports stars or musicians,” he shares. “I try to keep things true to life. It’s all about what’s real, not sentimental fluff.”
The Marquee in Drumlish stands out as a hallmark of his storytelling. “That song is a bit of history wrapped up in just three minutes,” Declan explains. “It honors the great bands of the 60s and 70s, like Big Tom and Larry Cunningham, while also reflecting on my childhood, seen through the eyes of a young boy at the time.”
When asked about country music today and the differences between Irish and American styles, Declan offered his perspective: “Country music as we know it started in Europe with immigrants bringing their folk songs to America,” he explains. “But Irish country is still about our own lands, people, and dances. It’s different from American country, but the heart of it is the same.”
He elaborates: “The very early stages of country music came from Ireland and Europe as traditional and folk music. It then amalgamated with other styles in America to become what’s known as country music today. But Irish country music has stayed true to our local stories and rhythms.”
Though steeped in country, Declan’s influences span genres. “I grew up listening to rock and roll—The Beatles, Elvis, and even The Crests,” he says. “I still love singing those old songs, but country music is where I’ve found my place.”
For Declan, every performance is about creating a personal connection. “When I step on stage, I imagine the crowd is in my living room,” he explains. “It’s my job to make them forget their troubles and give them a good night out. That’s the goal every time.”
This December, fans can enjoy an evening of music, stories, and craic at The Island Theatre in Ballinamore. Declan’s Where’s the Party tour stops there on Sunday, December 8th, 2024. Doors open at 7pm, with the show starting at 8pm. Tickets are €25 (+ €2 booking fee). Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a first-timer, this promises to be a night of energy, nostalgia, and timeless entertainment.
