The 2024 Leitrim Volunteer Awards, held on November 22 at The Dock Arts Centre, recognized the selfless contributions of individuals and groups who strengthen the community. Michael Harding, the keynote speaker, emphasized the transformative power of volunteering: “Every time you bring people together volunteering, you’re saying to them: ‘You matter.’ That’s the biggest thing that builds community.” Harding’s words reflected the evening’s theme, celebrating those who create positive change through their dedication and hard work.

Silvia Bourbine was named Volunteer of the Year – Environment and Heritage for her remarkable contributions to Mountain Meitheal Northwest Group. Silvia’s passion for mountain trail building, sustainable practices, and community engagement has significantly enhanced the local walking experience. Her leadership, despite health challenges, has inspired many to connect with the outdoors.

The Young Volunteer of the Year award went to Jude Murphy, a dedicated volunteer with the Rossinver Community Development Company. Jude’s reliability and sense of humor make him a favorite among the local community, where he plays an essential role in organizing events and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Volunteer of the Year – Community was awarded to Thelma Banks for her outstanding service to Dromahair, where she supports various groups, including the Defibrillator group and the Killenummery Women’s Group. Her quiet dedication has strengthened the sense of community in the area, showing the power of local volunteerism.

Daria Mazina received the Award for an International Person’s Contribution for her leadership in Carrick-on-Shannon Tidy Towns. After relocating from Ukraine, Daria quickly integrated into the community and helped lead the town’s successful Tidy Towns efforts, culminating in the Ireland’s Best Kept Town award.

Volunteer of the Year – Children and Youth was given to Siún Mhig Fhloinn, who has made a significant impact at Gaelscoil Chluainín. Siún’s work in promoting inclusivity and her role in opening the first Autism Unit in the school have made her a key figure in the community. She has also led initiatives to encourage the use of the Irish language among parents and children.

Catriona Charles was honored with Volunteer of the Year – Community for her dedicated work at the Mohill Family Support Centre. Catriona has volunteered for over eight years, helping organize children’s camps, youth clubs, and a variety of other activities. She also serves on the board of the Irish Kidney Foundation, advocating for organ donation.

In the Social Inclusion category, Cora Molloy was recognized for her work tutoring Ukrainian refugees in English. Through her enthusiasm and compassion, Cora has helped many learners gain confidence and integrate into the local community, creating a space for cultural exchange and mutual support.

Seán Ledwith received the Volunteer of the Year – Youth Services award for his 20 years of service with Carrigallen Foroige Club. Seán’s commitment to youth development through community service, fundraising, and environmental projects has had a profound impact on the local young people.

The Volunteer Award for work with Older People was given to Iryna Tsymbal, who has become a trusted companion for older residents through the ALONE program. Her kindness and reliability have made her a vital part of the community, helping others feel less isolated.

The event also celebrated outstanding groups, including Ciara Turbett and Aisling Heaney from the Mohill Friends of Breastfeeding Mum2Mum group, who provide invaluable support to new mothers, and the Carrick-on-Shannon Library's Children’s Art Class, led by Olena Zhuravel and Valeria Shvets, for bringing children from diverse backgrounds together through creative workshops.

The Ballinamore Community Services Hub Volunteers were recognized for their work in promoting environmental sustainability through their repair cafe and swap shop. The volunteers’ efforts have helped reduce waste and provide essential services to the community.

The Lifelong Achievement Award was presented to Kathleen Kearns for her decades of tireless volunteering. From supporting Foroige and the FRIENDS group to organizing community events, Kathleen’s energy and commitment have left a lasting mark on the Leitrim community. “If Kathleen is on board, you can rest assured an event will run smoothly,” said Josephine Stroker, Manager with Leitrim Volunteer Centre.

As Michael Harding concluded, “Thank you for all that you do for each other and for the Leitrim of now and the Leitrim of the future.” The event highlighted the essential role volunteers play in creating a connected, inclusive, and thriving community.
