Parents with Cllr Paddy O'Rourke and Cllr Gary Prior during a meeting at the Bush Hotel on September 20
A significant milestone in securing a much-needed residential unit for adults with disabilities was achieved after a meeting between HSE representatives and local politicians on November 22.
The HSE has agreed to acquire a South Leitrim property for use as a residential unit for adults with disabilities.
Parents were informed on September 20, during a meeting at the Bush Hotel, that the building had been identified.
This follows two and half years of advocacy from parents for a suitable facility. Leitrim and Monaghan are currently the only two counties in Ireland without full-time residential care.
The house for the residential unit is four-bed.
Fianna Fáil councillor Gary Prior, who has been working closely with parents advocating for a residential home, has strongly welcomed the news but acknowledges that more work remains to be done.
“One property won’t be enough, we’ll need to acquire more down the line but this is a major step. It’s a massive start,” said Cllr Prior.
A respite unit for adults with disabilities is also planned for HSE-owned grounds in Carrick-on-Shannon, with construction expected to begin in early 2025. The project, which is currently in the tendering process, is expected to take 18-months to complete.
This property represents the next step in the plan.
“It’s fantastic news, the parents are happy and relieved. They’ve been fighting hard for this for the past couple of years.
“We’d like to thank all family members and public representatives for helping to make it happen,” Cllr Prior added.
