In a stunning moment at the Winter Fair in Carrick-on-Shannon earlier today, a Limousin cross heifer calf achieved a jaw-dropping sale price of €30,000. The 345kg calf, owned by Derrick Forde from Corrandulla, County Galway, became the highlight of the day, attracting significant attention from bidders and onlookers alike.
The young heifer stole the spotlight at Sunday's pre-sale show, impressing the crowd with her impeccable style and undeniable presence. Born in May 2024, she boasts an impressive lineage, being sired by Dovea Genetics’ Milbrook Dartangan ET, with her dam descending from the prestigious Belgian Blue bull, Empire D’Ochain.
The exceptional animal was led by Johnny Burke, also from Galway, who expertly showcased the heifer on the halter during the event. The sale marks one of the highest prices ever recorded for a Limousin cross heifer calf at the Winter Fair, an event renowned for its impressive livestock and record-breaking prices.
The fair, held annually in Carrick-on-Shannon, is a centerpiece of the agricultural calendar, drawing breeders and buyers from across the country. The quality of livestock on display consistently attracts top prices, but today's sale stands out as an extraordinary highlight.
Speaking after the sale, owner Derrick Forde expressed his delight at the result. "This is a fantastic day for us," he said. "We always knew she was special, but achieving a price like this is beyond our expectations."
The heifer's sale underscores the value placed on premium livestock in Ireland's agricultural sector and further cements the Winter Fair's reputation as a premier marketplace for top-tier cattle.
As the agricultural community reflects on the record-breaking sale, the €30,000 Limousin cross heifer calf is sure to remain a talking point for years to come.
