Joseph Gilhooley, CEO of Leitrim County Council, announced that they will lodge an application to An Bord Pleanála for a boardwalk between Carrick-on-Shannon and Leitrim Village.
The boardwalk will be around 9 km long and will run along the Shannon, Mr Gilhooley told Shannonside.
The project is intended to provide a high-quality walk and cycle route which will connect to the blueways around lough Allen.
The boardwalk project is part of the Joint Draft area plan and is aimed at improving tourism to the area by connecting towns.
The investment in a quality blueway trail will attract people to the town and enhance visitor numbers and have a knock-on economic benefit for the town and the immediate surrounds,” stated the draft joint area plan.
The boardwalk project is being designed now and an application for approval will be lodged with the An Bord Pleanála in 2025.
