The Old Barrel Store in Carrick-on-Shannon, a building steeped in local history, suffered significant internal flooding on Dec 27. The incident prompted an immediate response from Leitrim County Council staff, who were on site to begin a cleanup operation.
The building, which is owned by Leitrim County Council, currently houses the tourism information office and the Leitrim Tourism offices. Despite its modern function as a hub for visitors and local tourism promotion, the Old Barrel Store carries a rich historical legacy. It once operated as a Guinness facility and, in later years, served as Carrick’s fire station.
The alarm was raised earlier in the day when the extent of the flooding became evident. While the cause of the incident remains under investigation, council staff acted swiftly to mitigate the damage and ensure the building’s safety.
Local photographer Gerry Faughnan captured the scene, noting the unfortunate turn of events for the iconic structure. The cleanup process is ongoing, with hopes that the building will soon return to its usual operations.
