The much-loved organisation, Leitrim Animal Welfare, shared a heartfelt Facebook post reflecting on the past year, revealing the challenging decision to reduce staff numbers.
“2024 has been a year of significant challenges, including the very difficult decision to reduce our staff due to financial struggles. This was not an easy decision, and we are incredibly thankful for the dedication and hard work of all those who have been part of our team,” the post read.
In September of last year, Leitrim Animal Welfare initiated a fundraising campaign to address the rising costs of electricity, food and veterinary supplies.
Sadly, in October the organisation mourned the loss of its founder, Christine Coulson, who dedicated 26 years to improving the lives of animals.
“Christine’s passion and commitment to the welfare of animals touched everyone who knew her, and we were so fortunate to have spent time with her, learning from her and sharing in her vision,” the statement continued.
Despite facing setbacks, the organisation is determined to grow and continue making a meaningful impact for animals.
Leitrim Animal Welfare announced plans to construct a brand-new cattery, along with a special education room named ‘Christine’s Classroom’ where children will learn about the importance of animal welfare.
Additionally, they have plans for a new canteen area for volunteers.
“Once this work is completed, we will be welcoming new volunteers, and we look forward to working with those of you who want to make an impact with us,” the organisation shared.
“We have big plans to launch new education programs and extend our reach even further into the community. With your continued support, we can make an even greater impact.”
Leitrim Animal Welfare plays a vital role in the county, taking in, caring for, and rehoming hundreds of dogs each year.
As the only animal shelter in Leitrim, the charity is deeply valued and admired for its exceptional work and dedication.
